Alliance of Baptists Meeting in Raleigh
The Officers and Co-Directors of the Alliance of Baptists met in Raleigh last weekend to approve a budget and plan for the future. The Alliance is Pullen’s denominational partner. It’s the most progressive Baptist group in the US and probably the world. In fact, the Alliance of Baptists is more like a “movement” than a Christian denomination. It has always tried to follow the winds of the Spirit by including and affirming people on the margins – women, women in ministry, the LGBTQ+ community, open-minded Baptists generally, and global Baptists who seek a progressive Baptist partner. Now the Alliance is working to become an antiracist organization by tackling White Supremacy within the organization and its congregational and ministry partners. This is challenging work for a predominately white movement. Helping to lead this effort is Alliance Co-Director Rev. Dr. Elijah Zehyoue, native of Liberia raised in the US South. Rev. Dr. Zehyoue spoke to one of Pullen’s Sunday groups discussing Palestine and Israel and brought the sermon in Sunday’s worship. His central theme was our need for a new foundation to replace White Supremacy, the foundation of virtually everything in our country which we have exported to the rest of the globe.
